Introversion – An innate quality

According to current knowledge, introversion or extroversion is innate and a rather stable characteristic over the life span, which is associated with different stimulus processing in the brain. Studies have shown higher brain activity in introverted individuals – regardless of whether they are working or resting. It is possible that these people use the inward turn as a kind of protective barrier against too many stimuli.

“The amount of stimulation that extroverts find stimulating can be overwhelming or disturbing for introverts,” says psychology professor Colin DeYoung of the University of Minnesota.
